VITAMIN D
Also called Cholecalciferol, this vitamin is closely related to calcium
for the purposes of maintaining adequate bone structure.
Functions of vitamin D
- Fundamental for
the
exploitation of calcium and phosphorous,
necessary for healthy bones and teeth, and to maintain our nervous
system in good condition.
- It maintains adequate levels of calcium in the blood.
Where to find vitamin D
In part it forms on the skin through the action of solar rays
(ultraviolet) and in part it must be ingested with food.
Foods
rich in vitamin D are oily fish, codliver oil, eggs, milk and dairy
products.
Nutritional needs
The recommended daily intake is 5 micrograms/day (depending on exposure
to the sun).
Lack of vitamin D
Its lack may cause rickets or osteomalacia.
